Well tasting, but seems to be stuck in old school British cuisine. Still the dining area and the lounge could do with a little freshening up in decor and arm chair covers, while still maintaining the old charm. The black and white pictures of Kilimanjaro offers a beautiful documentation of the mountain and how the glaciers have changed over the years. The dining room in the old main building has the charm of an era long gone. The rooms are renovated fairly recently and comfortable to the standard of the price charged. The original main building of the old farm is the heart of the hotel with rooms in bungalows spread across a beautiful garden. Today there are many tour operators arranging climbs, but no one can take away the "old time charm" of Marangu hotel. For many years the starting point for a climb of Africa's tallest mountain was Marangu Hotel. Over time their farm became the first hotel on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, famous for arranging climbing trips on the mountain. In the 1930 coffee farmers Bennet and Lany started to take in paying guests to compensate for falling coffee prices.

We would highly recommend a climb on Kilimanjaro with the Marangu Hotel - they offer a seamless, personal level of service that is experienced, professional and friendly. The climb guides were great at keeping us moving at a safe pace to allow for altitude and in making sure we were well hydrated. The huts at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo were similar to our first trip, but with the upgrades of solar lights. The Marangu Route was a pleasant surprise - there were not too many visitors, so we had the trail to ourselves for most of the time. Our camp cook was also very good given the limited facilities and resources on a 6 day climb. We knew we were in good hands from the first day. The climb guides were very knowledgeable, careful and focused. They quickly addressed any equipment challenges or shortages we had. The pre-climb briefing was excellent in preparing us for the climb. The team at Marangu was professional, friendly and experienced. We really appreciated the hot showers (esp. The same team was in place, but the Marangu Hotel has been nicely and tastefully upgraded - rooms, baths and public spaces. The hotel was very helpful with organizing transfers from Nairobi to Moshi and the hotel before and after our travel. From start to finish, we were very happy with our trip. We went back to Marangu Hotel for a second time following a 17 year break. I'd recommend asking for a room in a building with a tile roof. For women, I'd recommend just washing your hair in the evening and letting it air dry at bedtime, and 2) our room (room 11) was in a building with a metal roof and it made quite a loud chatter when the wind whipped up at night. The only negatives I can think of are 1) I had to borrow the hair dryer and it was very underwhelming. The staff could not be nicer and it was a pleasure staying there. Laundry services are also available for a reasonable price. There is also an office that was able to give shillings for US dollars. We left for a few days and they stored our main luggage for us. Rooms were not equipped with safes, but there was a main safe in the reception area where valuables could be locked up. Drinking the water at the Marangu is not a problem as they get water from their own spring. All the food at the Marangu Hotel is made fresh.

For lunch, they have a very reasonably-priced menu. Dinners changed each evening and were also very good. Rather, the breakfast was usually the same, i.e., cereal, fresh fruit, eggs/omelets, toast, coffee, juice, and was delicious. The breakfast and dinner meals were very good, and were not on a menu. The room was not fancy, but was large, clean and comfortable. We stayed at the Marangu Hotel from through Jan 8, 2017.
